Kirsty Cotton is a fictional character from the Hellraiser media franchise, created by writer Clive Barker. She first appeared in the 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, where she is a friend and colleague of Rory Cotton (named Larry in the film adaptation). In the 1987 film Hellraiser, written and directed by Barker, she is the teenage daughter of Larry Cotton and stepdaughter of Julia Cotton. Portrayed by actress Ashley Laurence in all her film appearances, Kirsty appears in Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, has a cameo in Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, and plays a supporting role in Hellraiser VI: Hellseeker. In the novella The Hellbound Heart, Kirsty has an unrequited attraction to her married friend and colleague Rory Cotton. After helping him move into a house he inherited with his brother Frank, her investigation into whether Rory's wife Julia is having an affair leads her to discover Julia has been murdering men to feed Frank and aid his escape from the Cenobites. In the 2018 short story Hellraiser: The Toll, which bridges The Hellbound Heart and Barker's 2015 novel The Scarlet Gospels, her full name is given as Kirsty Cotton. She also appears in Boom! Studios' Hellraiser comic series, set roughly twenty years after the third film; by issue No. 8, she becomes a Cenobite herself, trading places with Pinhead who once again becomes human. In the 2018 audio drama of The Hellbound Heart by Bafflegab Productions, she is portrayed by English actress Alice Lowe, and the adaptation keeps the dynamic of Kirsty being Rory's friend and colleague.
In Their Own Story
In Hellraiser, Kirsty moves with her parents to England to the house of her uncle Frank Cotton, but refuses to live with them. Seeing Julia and a man enter the house, she follows them and witnesses Julia attack the man and her skinless uncle Frank begin to eat him. Kirsty grabs the nearby Lemarchand's box, tosses it out a window to distract Frank, and escapes. After being taken to a hospital, she solves the puzzle box and summons the Cenobites. She bargains with them, offering Frank instead of herself. Returning to her father's house, she discovers Frank has killed Larry and taken his skin as a disguise. When the Cenobites reappear, Frank accidentally stabs Julia to death and is killed by the Cenobites. Kirsty uses the box to banish the Cenobites back to their dimension, then attempts to burn the box, but a man grabs it from the fire and transforms into a winged, skeletal creature before flying away. In Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Kirsty is in the Channard Institute, a psychiatric hospital. She tells Dr. Philip Channard and his assistant Kyle MacRae about her experiences. Dr. Channard summons Julia from a mattress by having a patient cut himself on it; Julia eats him. Kirsty and Kyle go to Channard's house to use the Lament Configuration to resurrect her father, but Kyle is killed and eaten by Julia. Kirsty, Channard, and patient Tiffany are taken to the Cenobites' realm. After Julia kills Frank, Kirsty reveals a picture of a man identical to Pinhead from Channard's office, making the Cenobites realize they were once human. Channard becomes a Cenobite and goes on a rampage. Kirsty has Tiffany re-solve the box while she uses Julia's skin as a disguise. Channard is fooled and accidentally killed by Leviathan. Kirsty and Tiffany escape back to Earth. In Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Kirsty makes a small cameo in videos from the Channard Institute. In Hellraiser: Hellseeker, Kirsty has married Trevor Gooden and supposedly died in a car crash. Pinhead reveals Trevor repeatedly cheated on Kirsty and conspired to kill her using the box. Trevor's plan backfired: Kirsty proposed to give the Cenobites five souls for her own, killed three of his mistresses and his friend, and shot Trevor in the head, causing the car accident. The film's final shot shows Kirsty leaving a crime scene with the box, having escaped conviction by framing Trevor for the murders she committed before killing him.
