John, known as Detective Sean Carter in Hellraiser: Judgment, is a police detective and Iraq War veteran who investigates a series of murders based on the Ten Commandments. Unbeknownst to his colleagues, he is the serial killer known as the Preceptor. He is outraged that his wife Alison had an affair, and he forces her and his brother David to open the Lament Configuration at gunpoint, summoning the Cenobites. The Auditor of the Stygian Inquisition appears, telling Sean the Inquisition has found him guilty of his sins. The angel Jophiel intervenes, claiming Sean is part of Heaven's plan to instill fear into sinners, but Pinhead arranges for Detective Christine Egerton to kill Sean.

Sean Carter, a police detective and Iraq War veteran, investigates a series of murders with his brother David and Detective Christine Egerton. The murders are based on the Ten Commandments. Sean goes to an abandoned house and loses consciousness, waking up in the Stygian Inquisition's domain in Hell. The angel Jophiel intervenes and tells the Inquisition to release him. Sean escapes with a stolen puzzle box. Later, Sean reveals himself as the Preceptor, the killer. He forces his brother David and his wife Alison to open the box at gunpoint, summoning the Cenobites. Pinhead tells Sean no deal will be made for his soul. The Auditor appears, saying the Inquisition has found Sean guilty of his sins. Jophiel intervenes again, but Pinhead arranges for Christine to kill Sean.
