The LeMarchand Configuration is a puzzle box that Frank Cotton, a hedonistic criminal, acquires in Düsseldorf after hearing rumors of its power. It is said to open a "schism" or portal to an extradimensional realm of unfathomable pleasure ruled by beings called the Cenobites. When Frank solves the box in his deceased grandmother's home in England, the Cenobites appear—horribly scarified creatures whose bodies have been modified to the point that they appear sexless and in constant pain. They warn Frank that he cannot renege on their agreement once it is made, but he eagerly accepts their offer of experiences he has never known before. The Cenobites then subject him to total sensory overload, taking him to their hellish dimension for an eternity of torture. Later, Frank's blood, mixed with semen left on the floor, opens a dimensional schism that allows his desiccated corpse to return. The box is later used by Kirsty, a friend of Frank's brother Rory, who solves it accidentally and summons a Cenobite. She bargains with the Cenobite, leading it to Frank in exchange for possibly being left alone. At the story's end, the Engineer, the leader of the Cenobites, gives the box to Kirsty to watch over until another seeks it out.

In Düsseldorf, he obtains the box and returns to his deceased grandmother's home in England. Solving the box, he is horrified when the Cenobites appear—creatures whose bodies are modified to the point of appearing sexless and in constant pain. They warn him he cannot renege on their agreement, but Frank accepts their offer. The Cenobites subject him to total sensory overload and take him to their hellish dimension for an eternity of torture. Later, Frank's brother Rory moves into the home with his wife Julia. When Rory cuts his hand in the attic, his blood mixes with Frank's semen on the floor, opening a dimensional schism. Frank returns as a desiccated corpse. Julia finds him and promises to restore his body. She seduces and murders men, feeding them to Frank so he can regenerate. Kirsty, a friend of Rory's, discovers Frank and uses the puzzle box as a weapon before fleeing. She solves the box accidentally, summoning a Cenobite. She bargains that if she leads them to Frank, they will take him back and perhaps leave her alone. The Cenobite agrees. Kirsty returns to the house, where Frank has killed Julia. She baits Frank into admitting his name, and the Cenobites appear, ensnaring him and returning him to their realm. The Engineer then gives Kirsty the box to watch over until another seeks it out.
